Second Harvest Food Bank has a mission to provide food for people in need in our community. Second Harvest Food Bank of Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties' service area stretches from South San Francisco to Gilroy and from the ocean to the bay. From July 2010 through December 2010, we provided food to an average of 247,000 individuals each month, making us the single largest non-profit provider of food to low-income people in our service area. Of those we serve, the majority are families with dependent children and senior citizens. In that period, we provided 23.4 million pounds of food to those in need through our direct distribution programs and our network of 326 partner nonprofit agencies. To help ensure that those who need food have access to it, we operate a multilingual toll-free hotline where we connect callers with food programs in their neighborhood. In addition to providing food, we conduct nutrition classes and work with lawmakers to advocate for policy changes that can help eliminate hunger and its root causes. Second Harvest Food Bank is a certified member of Feeding America (formerly known as America's Second Harvest), a network of food banks and food distribution programs in the United States. This membership allows Second Harvest Food Bank to cooperate with other member food banks, to receive food from national corporate food donors, and to benefit from national publicity and mutual support.

The Sonoma Valley Mentoring Alliance is a 501 c 3 non-profit organization located in Sonoma, California. We make one-on-one matches between at-risk youth and caring adults who commit to a long-term relationship with that child.
Of all the research currently available, one thing is for sure…the single most important factor in determining a child’s success is the presence of one caring adult in their life, and it need not be their parent. For many of the kids in our program, that caring adult is their mentor!
It takes a community to raise a child, and that is exactly what the Sonoma community is all about. We presently have 450 loyal, dedicated adult volunteers who have made a very serious commitment to the child they are matched with. For a good many of our volunteers, the relationship they form with their mentee is very likely to last a lifetime.
We have no idea what life changes will be brought about for these children because of their involvement in mentoring. But this we do know - diversity is being celebrated, and we are bridging the gaps in the cultural divide. Our next goal is to encourage all of these children who are reaping the benefits of mentoring to come back after college graduation, and PAY IT FORWARD by becoming a mentor themselves…a wonderful way to pass it on!

Based in the East Bay, the Bread Project offers three food industry training streams for low income and high risk adults of the Bay Area seeking to improve their economic capability and become self-sufficient: 1) Bakery Production; 2) Food Service; and 3) Advanced Training. Programs run either nine or 12 weeks. Each stream includes instruction in job readiness, including resume writing, interviewing and job retention skills, in addition to positive health and life habits that lead to successful employment outcomes. Individualized assistance and follow-up services help trainees find, obtain and retain jobs. Through our catering activities and social enterprises, we connect training needs with market opportunities where trainees obtain on-the-job experience preparing products for customers. This enhances our trainees’ employment outcomes and provides for a more sustainable revenue model. Over the past eleven years, the Bread Project has assisted more than 800 people and helped over 600 find jobs. Cumulatively, our program has an 86% graduation rate and 78% job placement rate. Current employment partners include Acme Bread Company, Berkeley Bowl, Grace Baking Company, Jamba Juice, Mariposa Baking Company, Prime Time Nutrition, Safeway, San Francisco Soup Company and dozens of others.
